Meerea Park XYZ Chardonnay 2015 (Hunter Valley, NSW)
Today’s wine is the Meerea Park XYZ Chardonnay from the 2015 vintage in the Hunter Valley, for a value wine at the $20 level this is an absolute standout.
If you like “old school chardonnay”, and by old school I mean good use of fruit and oak with a slightly creamy finish then this is definitely the wine for you.
It’s a bigger style of Chardonnay a little phat so to speak not too flabby or blousy though. On the nose it’s all stone fruit – so think to yourself white peaches and nectarines, but on the palate it’s a really rich experience. The stone fruits really come through in spades and the fruit is completely in balance with the oak. Even though this wine was fermented in new and old oak for six months, it doesn’t overwhelm.
It’s a great little wine, I have had this one open for about three days and the flavours have really fleshed out and developed so it has become really quite rich and decadent. On the food side of things – if you are cooking say bigger style seafood dishes or white meat or for instance creamy pasta then this is definitely a perfect match. Alternatively, if you are just looking for a really good quaffing white wine then this is one I would definitely recommend getting some of.
