|Wine: THISTLEDOWN “THE VAGABOND” GRENACHE 2016|
|Region: McLaren Vale|
|Tasting Note: These wines are head turners. After an afternoon tasting 100 wines, these Thistledown wines made by Giles Cooke stood out and made me stop and think. Every so often, when you try really good Grenache – you realise what an amazing wine it is.
Giles Cooke is focused on Grenache from the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek, and with it he makes elegant aromatic red wines.
The Vagabond from McLaren Vale is probably the more powerful of his wines, because it is made in such a way that you notice the underlying depth of flavour. Earthiness predominates on the nose and the palate combines with rich black fruit flavours like cassis and blackberry, but there remains an underlying seam of red fruit. Tannins are fine and delicate, and acids complete the mouthful, ready for another glass.
A great wine to drink, just remember to give it a decant. If you hide it away, it will repay you when you finally try it.
